You are correct, there is a timer circuit in the starting circuit. It doesn't spin the starter until the solenoid is energized, after 2 seconds, there should be enough inertia in the crankshaft and piston assembly to carry the engine through the cranking process without the compression being relieved. What they did was use a smaller starter and battery that what would have been needed w/o the release. Max
